Wr-ea-king (Writing/Reading/Speaking - where to draw the division)

This week I am starting with my first student who wants to improve his reading and writing rather than his speaking (already good).

I read in ESOL 3 today that one of the best ways of improving your written English is to write a diary. I intend to try this myself - a sentence or two a day of Thai minimum.

So far all my classes have been dubbed conversation English lessons and with the exception of some of my early lessons with private students where I encouraged the writing of stories, I have pretty much stuck to this remit. I would like to set myself three goals for the rest of this month.

1. To write a framework for a writing lesson
2. To write a framework for a speaking lesson
3. To write a framework for a reading lesson

Can they ever really exist apart from each other? What aspects of each form of language learning need to be present in each medium?
